Common Commercial Auto Insurance Questions

Why do I need commercial auto insurance?

You never want anything to go wrong when driving for business, but you can’t ignore the fact that you, your vehicles and drivers are no more immune to accidents than anyone else. Commercial auto insurance is the financial cushion that will be there to help a business pay pick up the pieces of these problems. Even though you might find yourself in a tricky situation, you’ll know that you have appropriate insurance benefits to help you through it.

What does commercial auto insurance cover?

The average commercial auto policy can offer numerous benefits, each of which can apply to different loss scenarios involving your vehicles or drivers. These include:

  • Liability Insurance: When an accident is deemed your fault, this coverage help you pay for the damage you do to others (like other drivers) who weren’t in the car with you.

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: This plan pays for third-party medical bills and sometimes for death benefits.

  • Property Damage Liability Coverage:  This pays for damage to the other party’s property.

  • Hired/Non-Owned Auto Liability Insurance: This liability coverage extends to vehicles not owned by the business but used by them for business purposes. These might include employees’ personal cars or vehicles that you rent or hire to use temporarily.

  • Collision Insurance: This covers damage to your own vehicle that you sustained in a wreck.

  • Comprehensive Insurance: This coverage pays for damage from non-accident mishaps, such as weather damage, fires, theft, vandalism or similar accidents.

  • Medical Payments/Personal Injury Protection: If you get hurt in an accident, this coverage can pay for your medical bills. Sometimes, it will cover other losses, such as lost income.

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance: This insures you against damage caused by someone else who doesn’t have appropriate liability coverage. If you are the victim of a hit-and-run, for example, then this coverage can pay for your car’s damage.

Additionally, other policies and endorsements might help you expand your benefits, such as:

  • Roadside Assistance

  • Rental Car Reimbursement

  • Custom Parts Coverage

  • Replacement Cost Vehicle Coverage

  • Gap Insurance

To insure cargo and commercial equipment carried within these vehicles, you will need to carry inland marine insurance and/or motor truck cargo coverage.

When is commercial auto insurance required?

The standard personal auto policy will not offer a business appropriate coverage for its vehicles and driving liabilities. Rather, commercial auto insurance contains the terms that will ensure that the business is able to sustain losses resulting from these hazards.

Various vehicles and drivers might need to be covered a commercial auto policy. These include:

  • Vehicles owned by a business

  • Employees who drive their personal cars on business-related errands

  • Company cars provided to employees for commercial and private use

  • Vehicles hired or rented by the business

  • Certain personal vehicles that qualify as commercial due to their weights or sizes

California requires nearly all drivers to carry auto insurance, and commercial drivers are no exception. Your commercial auto insurance policy must contain at least the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident

  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: $5,000 per accident

Keep in mind, if you work in interstate trucking or transport hazardous materials, then you might face additional coverage requirements set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Regardless of any coverage requirements, however, you should never hesitate to both increase your mandatory coverage limits and to invest in the optional benefits that will best protect you.

How much does commercial auto insurance cost?

Numerous factors can influence the costs of commercial auto insurance, including the types and amounts of coverage you buy, the location of your business and the value of the vehicles to be insured.

Our agents are committed to working with you to optimize benefits in ways that will still keep them affordable, even as you build upon your coverage to ensure you receive the highest level of protection.
