Vandalism can occur to anyone. It occurs in most areas, too. Even the safest community is not immune to its dangers.
In some situations, there is little you can do to prevent vandalism. However, you may be able to file an auto insurance claim for your losses. Insurance companies may provide coverage for vandalism. If you have comprehensive car insurance, you likely have this type of protection. There are a few things to know about filing a claim and whether it is beneficial to you.
First, File a Police Report
Third-party damage to your vehicle usually leads to legal action against another person. Many homeowners have outdoor video cameras today. You may be able to provide this footage to the police department. They will work to determine who is responsible for the loss. Even if this is not possible, the police will document the incident.
This is important evidence later. It also helps the insurance agency to file your car insurance claim. To file a police report, call the non-emergency number to your local department. Ask that an officer come to your home. He or she will take photos, document the incident, and write it up.
It is a good idea to document the incident yourself as well. Take photos of the damage. Do not move your car until you do so. You’ll want to be sure to gather any evidence left behind, too, such as broken bottles.
Contact Your Auto Insurer
The next step is to call your auto insurance agent. He or she may request the police report number. Be sure to provide any documentation you have. Then, your agent will determine if you can file a claim.
-
Do you have a deductible? If so, you must pay this amount before the insurance company will pay the remaining amount.
-
Is the agent assured you did not create the damage yourself? If you did cause the damage, this could lead to fraud charges.
With this information, your car insurance agent can help you process a claim. Minor damage may not be worth claiming due to deductibles. However, vandalism damage that requires repairs or repainting the car may be. Your agent will discuss all of your options with you. He or she will talk to you about the incident before helping you to process the claim and repairs.
