Making health goals is something many of us do. Unfortunately, we don’t always stick to those goals. Yet, it’s still important to make an effort. Achieving even incremental improvements to your health can make a huge impact on your overall well-being. The trick is to start small and build upon your success.
Here are three lifestyle changes you can make to get started on your road to a healthier self:
1. Avoid tobacco. Quitting smoking is often the number one item listed for improving health—and with good reason. Smoking is known to have numerous negative health impacts, namely cancer. But smokeless tobacco can have similar, detrimental health effects as well. To increase the length and quality of your life, it’s best to avoid all forms of tobacco. If you currently smoke or chew tobacco, it’s best to quit right away. There are many smoking-cessation products available to assist you in your effort to quit, including patches, gum and prescription medications. Speak with your doctor to learn more about available products and treatment options that may be right for you.
2. Lose weight. Got a few extra pounds? Did you know that those extra pounds can cause a variety of medical issues, including heart disease and cancer? Losing just a little weight can have significant health benefits. Adding even a moderate amount of exercise may be all that you need to lose those extra pounds and reduce your chances of developing chronic conditions. Dieting is also an important component to weight-loss. Your doctor can help guide you to a diet that fits your lifestyle and health needs.
3. Reduce your sodium intake. High blood pressure is a major problem in the United States. Reducing sodium (salt) intake is one way to lower blood pressure. If you are cooking meals at home, consider reducing or eliminating the amount of salt in the recipes you are preparing. Be sure to check product labels at the grocery store and evaluate how much sodium they contain. You may be surprised by how much salt you’re currently consuming.
To improve your health, you don't need to spend hours a day at the gym or go on a salad-only diet. Small, sustainable changes can be made that will have a positive impact on your health. Try to tackle one thing at a time so you are not overwhelmed with too much change at once. The most important step in any health regimen is the next one you take. Stay positive and keep working toward your health goals!
